When I picked this book up, I had no clue how compelling it would be. I absolutely couldn't put it down and didn't want to. I read it in less than 24 hours. This is one of those books that's almost too much to be true. Yet it's all entirely true. Six out of ten boys in one family developed schizophrenia, all without there really being a family history of it before them. It's a sad story, but it also shows how times have changed and theories about schizophrenia have morphed over the years. It's an incredibly good book that's woven so well by the author.

The science and family history Kolker is writing about is fascinating and mostly well told. (He gets a little meandering, though by the end, I understood the purpose in most of the tangents.) Everyone who recommended this book -- and there were MANY -- raved about how this is nonfiction that reads like fiction! Yes, that's true. 

But I wish I had known going in how much of the story was about the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of the kids, particularly the two daughters. This was a lot to spend time with, especially given that by the end of the book, there's not a lot of resolution. This isn't the fault of the author. Science takes a long time, families are complicated, etc. But knowing about the abuse, I wouldn't have picked this up. I could have gotten the gist of the science from book reviews and magazine articles.

I couldn't put this book down. It's sad and fascinating. Kolker  tackles extremely fraught subjects clinically and delicately, always giving the utmost respect to the people he's writing about.

The author discusses all of the very, very difficult subjects as clinically and respectfully as possible--there is nothing sordid here--but he is honest about things that happened to and between the family members he interviewed for the book. Some of those things are stomach-turning.
