I wish I had read this when I was in school to be able to reflect on it with a teacher and friends because I feel this book is meant for mulling and reflecting further. I switched between reading a digital copy and reading the audiobook so I could enjoy the quotes below and the Yorkshire accent of the narrator. This is a book for the forgiving who enjoy the duality of human nature and themes of revenge, but most importantly for those who are forgiving and appreciate imperfections. I’ve often read reviews that everyone in the world of Wuthering Heights is a bad person, every character is unlikable, but I found that even Heathcliff was worth sympathy. If anything I felt like Joe and Linton Heathcliff were robbed of some development or depth in the book, their characters were shallow with Joe being the least developed and though Linton had different sides to him he was easy to see through for the reader and Nelly just not poor Catherine. I would love to reread this again in the future, it’s a calming port in a chaotic world right now and made me feel some peace during a hard time. The way Brontë writes paints a love of the landscape the heights are set into and every aspect of the story is set in duality. The households are two pillars of civility and wildness, the characters often foil and counter eachother, and the generations repeat these themes until the resolution. I felt like I wanted to know more about Cathy and Haretons days together beyond Heathcliff and the resolution was too fast for the amount of healing their relationship did to the cycle of abuse and revenge. It was overall a beautiful book with complex frustrating characters that pull at your heart but act in such terrible ways you wish you could fix them.
