Here we have the development of one of my favorite characters in the manga, Kabru! His sense of “right” and “wrong” as well as his confidence in his judgment of others’ characters make for a new point of tension in the story as he tries to get rid of Laios, as he deems him unfit to be the master of the dungeon. He’s so strange and deceptively forthright, he brings both comedy and intrigue.

Then, of course, we have Thistle, another one of my favorite characters. Marcille’s crazed look as she realized Thistle was using ancient magic is also notable… how she oscillates between terrifying to absent-minded is always fun. I’m sorry she’s a victim of the dumb blonde stereotype; why everyone always underestimates her, much to their misfortune in later chapters.

Marcille’s capacity to use her powers wisely is called into question yet again. More details as to the Magic Academy to which she and Falin belonged, in addition to the magic that actually taps into alternate dimensions, prompt even more questions as to the systems of magic in this world. The way that Kui drops and scatters details like this makes it so that there’s always a sense of fascination and curiosity with the characters and story.

I also loved the Laios and Marcille student-teacher moments. Shuro and his party come to the rescue, and we see Laios absolutely oblivious to the dead look in this man’s eyes as he hypes him up. As more and more characters are added, it runs the risk of feeling too bloated, but Kui does a great job of balancing action and character and plot developments.

A fun time with just as beautiful artwork as always. Loved to see all the groups of characters start to meet up with each other! Can’t wait to read the next volume.
