Well-plotted and well-written in the technical sense, this book nevertheless did not quite work for me. For, you see, it must have been delightfully retrograde even in 1903 when it first appeared: the eponymous hero is a young old-monied patrician scion who is GOOD because he is a young old-monied patrician scion. The working class is patronized when quiescent and repressed when not.

Basically, the quote given in the book description gives a very good indication of the spirit of the novel.
