This review id for both Mrs. Bridge and Mr. Bridge. The following quotation is from Mr. Bridge:

"He wondered...if this is how they would end their lives, accompanying each other so closely, loving each other, touching one another with affection and sympathy, yet singularly alone."

To me this pretty much summed up both novels. A sad yet poignant look at the lives of a couple spanning from the 1920's to the 1940's.

Whereas Mrs Bridge was a superb portrayal of how a middle-aged woman adjusts to the monotony of suburban life interwoven with various themes, Mr Bridge is more straightforward in its approach showing how a deeply unlikeable individual can be materialistic and dead set in his conservative ways. His idea of a treat is to clip stock certificates to the Christmas tree. The core idea of the book that Mr Bridge cares more about accumulating wealth to 'provide' for his family than providing any love to them is a good one

After reading Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connell last month, it was only natural to read It’s companion Mr. Bridge, which was published 10 years later in 1969.
This line from a review by Webster Schott in Life magazine (and on the cover of my book) sums it up:
“With Mr. Bridge, Connell completes his saga of sweet joylessness and blunted sensibility, of marriage, family, and middle age on the Plains of Protestantism.”
Like Mrs. Bridge, I can’t say I liked or would recommend it for everyone, but it has been in my thoughts quite a bit since reading it. I am amazed at Connell’s ability to write so insightfully from the two different perspectives.
