Jaws is not a book about a shark. It’s a monster book. Don’t look to it for science or fact. Just be haunted by it.
The plot is pretty straightforward and basic; also predictable. There was a lot of unnecessary extra that either should have been shed or interwoven better (although I can't see how as it was irrelevant). Too much profanity. Weird and graphic sexual dialogue and encounter in the middle, which did nothing for the story. If anything it made the whole book worse. Too much character development on characters that didn't matter. I'm looking at you, Ellen Brody, and you too, Larry Vaughan. Worthless characters.
It was almost like there were two, unrelated stories going on. We had the shark adventure stuff, which is what I wanted. Then there was the community politics and Ellen's dissatisfaction drama. Character development should have stayed focused on Brody, Quint, and Hooper. Although none of the characters were really that interesting. Brody probably the most, although he was a fairly flat character too.
The shark adventure stuff was great and the reason I started the book. The beginning had more point of view from the shark, but then we stopped doing that at the end. That was a poor decision.
Fantastic ending, great suspense and action (during the shark scenes anyway). Steve Alten's Meg series is better for shark adventure stuff, if you're interested. It should have focused more on the man v. beast theme and less on anything else. It would have earned a higher rating from me. I would not recommend this book.

Surprisingly good! Entertaining for the most part. the affair scene was a little unnecessary but otherwise very good plotline.

I never seen the movie Jaws before reading this book so I did not know what to expect when going into this book. I read this book for pure entertainment purposes. I was pleased that it caught my attention and held it throughout the book. I never wanted to put it down at any point. As I was reading I was surprised by the other plot lines interwoven into the story rather than it all being about the shark (aka fish). I wasn’t happy with Ellen for having the affair with Hooper and reading about her fantasies when they were at the restaurant at lunch together was more than a little strange. Seriously, who fantasies about being raped? It was strange. Ellen was a strange character. The ending of the book wasn’t as exciting as I was anticipating while reading the climax leading up to it. It was a bit of a let down honestly. The shark escaped and the main character Brody was the only one left alive of the three shark hunters. I did like the foreshadowing about how unpredictable it is to predict the effects of a shark attack how it will kill some and leave others. All in all, it was entertaining read which kept my attention throughout.

One of the few movies that is better than the book. After reading this I actually bought a used copy of the DVD to re-live the terror I still recall every time I swim in the ocean. Titillating storyline between Brody's wife and Hooper that wasn't part of the movie, and yet somehow wasn't really resolved in the book. The best scenes of the book included the shark, but unfortunately that only boiled down to about ten pages; the rest of the story was a rather un-interesting commentary on the shark's effects on the local economy. Yawn.
