Well that was disappointing! I wanted a book about SHARKS, not some weird, quasi-existential snooze fest. I’m honestly shocked that there are so many five star reviews. (It’s it you, bots?) there were a lot of issues with the writing…. Like the dialogue, for starters. Just so basic and one dimensional. Then you have the plot, which just panders around (there’s infidelity, mafia, a dinner party, lesbians, very little shark, etc.). And the ending, what the actual f???
I know this book was written in the 70s, but the way Ellen is portrayed in this book is honestly sick and unnecessary. Not only is she overly emotional and naggy, she’s apparently had two fantasies in her life and they’re to be a prostitute and to be raped by a stranger. WHAT? This Book Was Written By A Misogynist for 1000 please, Alex. These are not fantasies that women have, Peter, this is 100% YOU. Sicko.
The parts of this book that actually featured the shark were good, so that’s what my stars are for. The movie was just infinitely better in every way.

Steven Spielberg is right, you do want the shark to win. Parts I and III are great suspense, however Part II turns into this lame melodrama involving unlikeable characters. The characters are flat and uninteresting, for the most part. Particularly Ellen Brody, who wallows in self-pity and makes a series of bad decisions to try and capture her upper class youth again. Martin Brody is merely a main character who succeeds in the end. Quint is a watered down Ahab. Hooper is a self-righteous rich kid. And the other side characters aren't worth mentioning. When the thrills come, they come hard. However, they are few and far in between. Peter Benchley should've spent more time on action instead of on clunky character development. Just watch the movie, it's way better.
