It should probably be called "1000 Comic Book You Might Be Able To Read (if you were a millionaire)" because, even taking into account reprints, some of the comics listed here are going to be hard to find and not cheap. But that's not why I dropped it a star.

Isabella is obviously in love with the medium and writes in an informal, chatty style and his decade-by-decade summaries of the industry are briskly done. However, while the book can't be said to be light on detail, listing creators (when known), publishers, copywrite and cover dates, it's sometimes a little - just a little - light on information about why we should read the comics. Basically, it boils down to the fact that Isabella liked them.

Add in a few proof-reading errors - a handful of entries are cut short - and this book, for me, was jyst a tad disappointing, despite it's lovely cover reproductions. That said, it's very interesting, through the picks made, to chart the rise and fall of publishers and, ultimately, the rise and rise of both independents and specialist graphic novels.

Coffee table book with some old classics. Not really a book you can just read through to get an idea of best comics to prioritize.

Read it on Kindle. Somewhat gratified to find I'd read most of them.
