Eh, life is too short to spend reading books I don't like. This book didn't interest me--for something that has a supposedly fantasy-based plot, it seemed more like it revolved around Lucas and his girlfriends. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance--I stopped at around 20%. This book isn't for me.

I found the protagonist to be very annoying and dull. He was like a passive bystander in his own life. The plot was slow and boring. I also did not like how they portrayed other characters.

Growing up on a small island in the Caribbean (St. Lucia, ironically), this book rang true for a few reasons. The folklore is rich and powerful. There's nothing quite as harrowing as native stories. They're meant to scare children into staying at home but they stick with you in a way most other things don't. It also rang true because I was the 'white girl' growing up. Luckily, as a native myself I wasn't as much an outsider as Lucas himself.

Samantha has written a tale worthy of the island it's set in. She's set up a scenery incredibly lucious and allows the reader to fit into it using all their senses. She's combined murder and mystery with a flair of magic and science and let's us wonder who and what is the truth. And she helps us ponder on the question; can one suspend their beliefs for just a little while to live in a fevered dream where ghosts are plentiful and not always bad?

Fun and easy read. Quick to get into. 4/5
