Most stories that deal with dub-con that rolls into non-con don’t ever really interrogate the consequences. After the events of the previous book, Nix is justifiably wary of Yejun and suffers from panic attacks on occasion. And although Yejun’s malice came from a place of trauma, he owns up to his actions being wrong. This book tackles Yejun doing everything he can to properly earn forgiveness. And you know what? With the way things unfold, I think it’s successful. Yejun understands that forgiveness has to be on Nix’s terms and timeline. There isn’t a magical solution. Nor do they get to a place in this book where sex is back on the table. But progress is made in the right direction where Nix can trust Yejun again.
It helps that Nix has grown into being a powerbottom, with his three Demons wrapped around his fingers. West is the one who reaps the most benefits because he’s been treating Nix right and Nix rewards him. Lake has to put in some work to get into Nix’s good graces, but he gets there. And I already went into the whole thing with Yejun.
The political scheming plot gets very intense up to and including the cliffhanger. There remains a part of me wary about plot inconsistencies, but other than the timeline feeling like a jumble in my head—which could just be me—there’s nothing that stands out as wrong. I’m definitely still immersed and at the edge of my seat. Sadly as of right now (May 2025), the next book hasn’t come out yet, so my binge of this series has to take a pause.

↠ Summary one liner
What will nix choose: to take his chance at freedom or present a united front as the 4 demons of foxglove grove to all that oppose them?
↠ Story Pacing
This author is superb at pacing and this installment kept that bar high. there is constant "is this the person responsible? oh shit, no, they only did this... is this person responsible...?" you dont know who to trust as new information and context keeps flooding in, all the while Nix is trying to properly sort his feelings about the guys and where he truly wants to be.
↠ Characters/development
The characters are all developing more nuanced layers, this installment particularly focusing on their overall integrity and the strength of what it means to be a Demon with them. Lake is really trying to be kinder to Nix, while also reveling in the deepening of their relationship. West is the one Nix is closest to right now and acts like an unpredictable conduit for Nix and their overall group dynamics. And Yejun is reeling from all of his own revelations and trying to control and grovel his way back into good graces. While their "sex as a weapon" was hot for the first installments, I'm glad to get some thickening of the boys without their sexuality so overtly taking over.
↠ Overall plot quality
Its a constant ebb and flow in the plot of solving one mystery only to unlock another. the rest of the cast is starting to come into clearer focuses, vs just the 4 guys generally. despite all the constant steam, i am definitely still on the edge of my proverbial seat to figure out who the killer behind everything is, and this story really digs into that interest.

Definitely need to read this series in order completely to understand the layers behind the exchanges between the characters, but its a thrilling light but still dark romance that i am eating up. although not the "deepest read", the story so engaging one can't help but binge... which now means I have to wait until August for the final installment. :(

I was happy to see follow through on the emotional damage from the last book instead of just sweeping it under the "he'll never hurt me again" rug. What I was not emotionally prepared for was a fourth book. I was personally victimized by that cliffhanger and now I have to wait until August.
