A typical Heyer. A mix of fun characters, amazing language and period details and just an enjoyable book that leaves you feeling happy. With sentences and words like this scattered throughout it is a delight.

‘You’re a skitterbrain, sir! A slibberslabber here-and-thereian, with no more thought for what you owe your name than some rubbishing commoner!’

Fun.

I wish I could give half stars -- I think this is a solid 2.5, mostly because the characters spend the majority of the book running around in circles, which quickly became repetitive. There's not really enough plot to sustain the length of the novel, which leads to a great deal of rehashing the same information over and over between different parties. But I enjoyed the heroine quite a bit, and the hero was certainly a gentleman.

Definitely unusual for a Regency romance: at least on my volume, the two characters plugged on the back (Charity and Dresford) are not the two who get together. Dresford is most chivalrous in attempting to help Charity, but there is hardly any actual interaction between the two. Charity seems very silly although sweet, and in the end, things work out for her in a way that has nothing to do with Dresford's efforts. Dresford and Henrietta end up together at the end after assertions through most of the novel that they felt like brother and sister. It was a bit strange...

Rating reviewed 12/27/2022.

Yeah, hmm, not one of my favourite Heyers. I got positively bored while the Viscount was looking for Cherry's granddad, and was not especially convinced by the central romance. Maybe my cousin is right -- you do have to know by the middle of the book which option the protagonist is going to go with, though it's better if the protagonist themselves doesn't know yet. I didn't -- as wasn't sure if this was going to be an "equals who banter" Heyer romance, or the "rich aristocrat + naive girl" type. It turned out to be the former but I think, say, Frederica is a better version of that type of Heyer woman than Hetta, whom you get to see hardly at all. Also, bleh at the Viscount & family being horrified at the prospect of his marrying Cherry because of her background, and the Viscount's consciousness of the duty he owes to his family being portrayed as a virtue you were meant to applaud.

One of my least favourite Heyers, I think, purely because it just feels a bit dull.

Georgette Heyer novels are amazingly fun reads, but this plot is poorly done and rehashed from her other stories.

No ha sido uno de mis favoritos de Heyer. La trama y los personajes son bastante planos

Possibly not one of Georgette Heyer's best, but still immensely enjoyable. Heyer manages to introduce characters which can be recognised in other stories (like the handsome young lord, the feisty heroine etc) - yet they are always different enough to make a book as fresh as if completely new to the reader. Her use of the slang which was prevalent at the time in which her books are set just adds to the enjoyment. And the inevitable single kiss at the very end of the book feels as passionate as a much more graphic scene.

I would recommend reading Georgette Heyer to anyone.
