Appreciate the opportunity to read this pre-publication from NetGalley. This one was okay. Slightly over dramatic plot line. However writing style has great potential, great description of characters throughout.

I try really hard to find something good about books I don't enjoy but apart from the fact that I finished (because I'm stubborn) and it didn't give me a headache I gave it two stars.
This was not the book for me. I don't usually liken one thriller writer to another but this story is as far fetched as one of John Marrs wildly convoluted sagas.
I hadn't read The Bucket List but I'd heard good things about it and thought if I couldn't understand this second in the Agent Adderley series I'd read it. I certainly won't bother now.
The basic storyline is 2 sisters - the pretty one and the disfigured one run a dating website. The pretty one likes dangerous sex and one night is found dead at a site where she was meeting a date. The not pretty sister thinks she knows who did it and why and is determined not to fall victim to the same perpetrator.
Thrown into this mix is the investigator John Adderley who has come from the FBI on a witness protection programme (of which obviously none of his Swedish colleagues are aware). For reasons I can't go into he begins to manipulate evidence, witnesses and the whole course of the investigation to save his new identity.
The next piece of information you need to know is that I listened to the audio of this narrated by Dion Graham (who has apparently won awards for his work). It was awful. As if the storyline was utterly insane enough Mr Graham decided to make all the women sound like a breathy Marilyn Monroe and his male characters veered wildly from Swedish to American never mind who they were. There is even a part where we meet a drug cartel leader who was supposedly Nigerian but sounded like Pacino's Tony Montana. How we didn't hear the words "Say hello to my leetle friend" is still baffling me.
So an incomprehensible story (which gets more and more ridiculous) along with an awful narration and I was delighted when Mr Graham uttered the words The End.

You're balls deep in a great pretend session with your Barbies and your brother comes out of nowhere and punts Barbie across the room and then makes you watch him play with his GI Joe dolls for two hours before you can have your Barbies back
MY OPINION
Ok so 20% in I was like: "WOW this book is written by TWO men and I'm enjoying it". The writing was solid (typical scandi style so if you don't like it—stay away), the case was juicy j, and the pace was pacing. But then the Peters went full male author. I just knew they couldn't resist. It's like the meme of the guy holding his breath with his veins popping in his skull, that's male authors trying NOT to write some stupid ass deep operative drug cartel secret mafia storyline.
The Peters said "hold my beer" and made this stupid ass storyline more ridiculous than normal. In fact it made Harlan Coben's KGB shit from The Woods seem sensible. So homedog is in SWEDEN and still gets caught up by a NIGERIAN drug lord from his FBI undercover days and then is tortured via fucking microsoft teams video chat??? PLZ!!!
If the Peters had kept this male author boo boo to a minimum, the story would've been great. I would've loved to learn more about Raw—it's like the dating app in John Marrs' The One, but more plausible. I fully believe dating apps will be using bank data and other PPI to match singletons. But alas, the whole Raw thing was a footnote as John bent over backward trying to cover up his stupid ass crimes only to sing like a canary to a random and his boss. So he did all that, for WHAT!? Waste of time.
Ok and don't get me started on Alicia pining over a guy who dead ass said he was in love with another woman yet somehow she's like WE'RE MEANT TO BE!! and then is shocked he smashed and passed her ass. FREE MY LADIES!!!
So yeah. Generous three stars on account of the writing and the potential.

In ‘De andere waarheid’ keren we terug naar John Adderley en pakken we de draad op waar het eerste boek eindigde.
Dit boek is, net als het eerste, in delen verdeeld en in ’De andere waarheid’ lezen we niet alleen vanuit het perspectief van John, maar maken we ook kennis met Alicia.
Eerlijkheid gebied mij te zeggen dat ik bij dit tweede deel wat moeite had om in het verhaal te komen.
Dit had echter niets met de schrijfstijl te maken, maar wel alles met het verleden van John. In dit boek haalt het verleden hem namelijk behoorlijk in. Alleen de uitwerking hiervan vond ik vrij summier en te gemakkelijk. Zeker voor een personage met een FBI achtergrond, vond ik dat de auteurs behoorlijk gemakkelijk over bepaalde gebeurtenissen heen stapten, waardoor het onrealitisch aanvoelde. Naar mijn mening zijn er wat toffe kansen qua uitwerking blijven liggen.
Personage Alicia pakt in dit boek de tweede verhaallijn op en dat heeft alles te maken met de moord op haar zus. Ook krijgen we vanuit haar perspectief stukjes uit haar verleden te lezen die een steeds beter beeld geven van het heden.
Vanuit John zien we een goed staaltje speurwerk vermengd met zijn persoonlijke beweegredenen. Hier zag ik de niet perfecte rechercheur terug waar ik zo gek op ben.
Wanneer beide verhaallijnen elkaar kruisen worden we verrast met wat gave twists en een opbouw aan spanning naar het einde toe. Het is absoluut interessant om te lezen hoe deze twee perspectieven uiteindelijk met elkaar verweven worden.
Hoewel ik dit tweede boek zeker spannend vond, voelde dit boek voor mij zeker in het begin wat traag. Het was voor mij niet de sterke binnenkomer dat het eerste boek was.
Het einde bevat een interessante twist welke bij mij een hoop vragen opriep. Want hoe gaat het verder met John en zijn baan bij de politie?
Ik hoop dat we niet lang hoeven te wachten op een vervolg!
Personages
‘De andere waarheid’ was voor mijn gevoel behoorlijk gericht op John en zijn verleden.
In het eerste boek hebben we hem natuurlijk al leren kennen, dit tweede deel ging echter nog meer de diepte in.
Dat John verre van perfect is, wisten we al, maar in dit boek komt dit nog duidelijker naar voren. Zijn acties neigen behoorlijk naar egoïsme en zelfbehoud.
Dit is wel waarom ik hem ontzettend interessant vind en wat hem aantrekkelijk maakt als personage.
Toch miste ik hier en daar enige ontwikkeling en wat betreft het wegwerken van losse eindjes uit zijn verleden miste ik dus wat realiteit.
Alicia vond ik een zeer interessant personage, zeker wat betreft haar relatie met haar zus. Uiteraard krijg je van mij geen spoilers, maar hun relatie was op zijn zachtst gezegd zeer bijzonder te noemen. Ik had graag nog iets meer verdieping rondom deze relatie willen lezen, maar het was voor dit boek absoluut meer dan voldoende om het beeld compleet te krijgen.
We zien in ieder geval overduidelijk twee personages die worstelen met hun geweten, maar vooral ook twee personages die kiezen voor zichzelf.
Ik vond John en Alicia samen een zeer interessante combi!
Conclusie
‘De andere waarheid’ kwam niet net als het eerste boek met een klapper binnen.
Het begin van het boek kwam wat traag op gang en het koste mij wat moeite om in het verhaal te komen. Wanneer de spanning echter aan de opbouw begint en er verrassende wendingen worden toegevoegd, leest het vlot weg.
De schrijfstijl van dit duo is beeldend en dat is zeker een pluspunt.
De personages waren interessant en de invalshoeken uniek.
John Adderley blijft mijn favoriete personage en het totale plaatje is er absoluut één van een toffe Scandinavische thriller.
