The plot really goes everywhere in this book. I tried to read it after DNFing it last year to give it another shot. I just can’t get into it. The atmosphere is great but all the themes and messages of the book are heavy handed and leave little room for the action of the characters and the plot to show the readers of just tell them. The romance isn’t bad either but it is a little bit insta-lovey.

Architecture student gets chosen to design a home for her favorite author’s estate. At no point does she actually do what she was hired to do. She’s off hanging out with the other kid from her school and snooping around the house. 

I get what the author was trying to do with the heavy misogyny and how it affects the MC deeply, so I did appreciate that at times. Unfortunately I had no connection to any of the characters- they fell so flat and there was no chemistry to be found.

Also, little to no backstory on the fairy king?? Why was he hanging around? He was apparently “stuck” on the estate because of the trees and berries everywhere but that doesn’t explain how he escaped to almost steal the MC? She said she saw him all of the time, but how? Not much story building, and the backstory of the north vs south seemed unnecessary other than to sprinkle in some racism for the characters. 

I listened to the audiobook on a road trip, and the fact that I finished it gives it 2 stars, maybe 2.5. I was kind of hoping for a dark ending where her love interest was over taken by the fairy king.

I'll be honest, I'm going easy on this book because of my own expectations of genre conventions and demographics, and considering this is a debut novel (Plus, this book was a gift recommended personally by a friend, hi A if you're reading this!!!). 

For a gothic romance, I found it very safe. I'm sure it's a taste thing, but I don't need to be shocked if the characters are plausibly shocked. I don't think it's a crime that the (admittedly heavy-handed) foreshadowing makes it easy to predict where this book goes. The story and ESPECIALLY the setting made it hard to put this book down, and for that alone it gets an extra half star. 

However, I really wasn't impressed with the worldbuilding. It seems to be going for for ambiguous low fantasy, almost steampunk in it's setting that never quite felt cohesive. The romance for me was a little lackluster, it almost felt tacked-on and I would have much preferred a more intimate friendship. I knew right from the beginning and that really cheapened a lot of the really touching and emotional scenes between

for me. Though with how young the characters are and how consistently high emotions are throughout the novel, I'm not too upset with how quickly things progressed both in their relationship and as characters than I am that the romantic relationship is there at all. 

The political implications of the countries being at war also never really felt consequential to the world other than further othering Preston, but the shared-yet-distinct feelings of being othered (Effy for her gender and Preston for his nationality) is never explored in a meaningful way I think because it seems like Ava Reid was much more interested in having

relating over their life experience than Effy and Preston. To me it felt like fantasy xenophobia was written for the sake of having fantasy xenophobia in a fantasy novel. Much like the romance, It felt a bit cheap. 

I know it sounds like I didn't like the novel but I had a lot of fun reading it. What works REALLY works, and I am always a sucker for an environment that's as alive and as destructive as any human-ish antagonist. The marrying of the sacred and the profane, and trying to juggle them and understand what's "real" and what's not is also something that I adore and fantasy hagiography in particular will always get me.

while i really enjoyed Reid's ability to world build with a passage or quote at the beginning of each chapter, i found that overall this novel lacked something remarkable to set it apart from any standard fantasy (with a dash of romance) novel. it felt truly that this novel relied on some of the most predictable tropes from both fantasy novels and romance novels (enemies to lovers .... yawn). early on in the novel, the sea and water metaphors seemed overstated and repetitive. in addition to this, all of the points that Reid was making regarding sexism and misogyny in academia were stated forthright rather than implied. it seems that this is a novel that lays out very plainly the plot and main themes, and because of this, it became predictable. i also think that Effy, as a "strong female lead," really does center her male counterpart and love interest far too much. at some points, it seems that Effy only makes it through to be with Preston, and at some points, Effy does seemingly have a lot of grace and empathy for men like Ianto who was violently misogynistic. considering this is a YA novel, it does make sense why the messages and themes of this novel are so blatantly obvious, and at the end of the day, this is such an easy read for anyone just needing a quick fantasy fix. unfortunately, i'm not the target audience for this one (´• ᴗ •̥`✿)

I loved the aesthetic of this book and I really felt as though I were in the world there with them. It is folklore fantasy crossed with light academia and the romance elements were really tasteful, complementing the style and tone of the book. I would love to explore this world further with any future spin-offs or novellas. I do feel as though the Fairy King could have featured more as an antagonist.
