I will slowly read through my Beatrix Potter collection as bedtime stories for the hombies.
Amazing art as usual, 10/10. Gave me flashbacks because it contains very specific images of DELICIOUS looking food that have been deeply ingrained in my memory since childhood.
Storywise, we have questionable morals and plot resolution but that's almost always the case with these innit. It's funny because it always takes a weird spin that I don't expect. But there are some reparations made so I didn't freak out too much.
I was going to give 3 stars, BUT because Mr. Tom Thumb's wife's name is HUNCA MUNCA, I THINK IT IS CLEAR WHY IT HAS 4. SHE IS ALSO A MATERIAL GIRL. LOVE HER.

Fun little story of the mice Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca and their visit to a dolls' house.
Although it is not and was not my favourite Beatrix Potter book, this one does have the added attraction (for girls with a thing for dollhouses, which my sisters and I were) of containing a very nice dollhouse!
This is so morbidly funny that I think it has thrown me into an existential crisis about doll house food. The mice can use the furniture and kitchen utensils, they can wear the clothing, but they can't eat the fake food. The little girl who plays with the dolls uses a policeman doll to confront the mice about their theft, and the mice sort of recognize his authority. It gives me such a whimsical feeling about how far belief can stretch in childhood games.
One of the best Beatrix Potter books! It’s brilliantly clever. As I read it now, I understand why- the little mice are like children, the dolls are like adults. As someone who played with dollhouses, the frustration with beautiful but inedible shiny plastic food! Being uncontrollably messy whilst everyone around is so neat and controlled..
The redemptive parts where the mice repay favours to the dolls (shhh, no spoilers) are brilliant. But I love that the mice are still irredeemably naughty and do what they want!
