A simple gothic vibes story when compared to The Mysteries of Udolpho or Dracula. I liked the little digs the townspeople have for the shepherd and the doctor characters, but the Scooby-do-reveal of the technology behind the phantasms isn’t as impressive from the vantage of the 21st century.

A riff on Dracula, with a Verne twist. Fairly typical Verne characters, but a fun setting and an interesting plot.

If not as scientifically theoretical or adventurous as some of his others, it stands out for just being solid and well-paced. It doesn't spend any more time anywhere than it needs to, and there is something to be said for that.
