Let the right one in,
Oskar is, in so many ways, a portrait of myself at younger age. Strange kid, with little to none friends, separated parents and out-of-ordinary hobbies. Every single trait of this personality moves him toward Eli, a dubious impersonation of first love.
They met at the park in front of Oskar building. Soon they begin an incredible friendship with inspirations in Pyramus and Thisbe. As in Ovidio Poem Oskar and Eli do great deal of they conversation between walls. Not by a hole in the wall as in Ovidio classic but with morse code in a modern approach.
Eli is a vampire. Not the kind of vampire modern culture brought to us with Buffy and Twilight or as the "old" culture as Interview with a vampire. It's raw, brutal and, some times, painful but always rewarding pass through some of the pages in this book.
It captures human nature, loneliness, cruelty, disgusting pathologies such as pedophilia, without make up. Yes, it's a vampire book. No, the vampires are no romantic beasts with thirst for blood. Neither do they twinkle in light. But you would be mistaken if you think they are the creatures to be afraid of.
That said, there's no other way to put it. It's a new concept, a new intake of the vampires myths that deserve reading and appreciation. You will not be afraid of Vampires, but will be apologetic and somewhat disgusted of being human.

Much more to the book than the film. Some of it challenging but I very much enjoyed this read and this author. Looking forward to reading more.

I'd been circling this book for a few years and never took the plunge for whatever reason. I'm sorry I didn't read it sooner. It turned out to be a blood-soaked gem!
The heart of the story is the friendship between Oskar and Eli, obviously, and that's where the book is at its strongest. There are a few other trails to follow in the story such as Tommy and his dealings with his mom's boyfriend which I felt was explored a bit more than necessary. And the group of drunk friends was tedious at times to say the least. I could have used a lot more Oskar and Eli in there instead of those guys for sure. There's an interesting and horrifying bit with an undead guy that was a pleasant surprise even if it wasn't totally necessary to the story.
Meanwhile, the movie version is very true to the book and happens to cut out all the things I didn't think we're especially interesting so there's that too!
