read for school

An amazing book, I read alongside the audiobook. Stephen Fry is a genius and really helped me through the poetry section of my university module. I would highly recommend anyone who has even a slight interest in writing poetry to give this book a go. It is so accessible, and a truly fantastic guide.

Nothing wrong with this book. I just find that I don't really want to write poems for now.

If I could give this book six stars I would. It introduced me to the wonderful world of metric poetry in English. For that I am very grateful to Mr Fry. Every chapter ends with exercises. It's absolutely fantastic idea which takes understanding and feeling poetry to the next level.

I read this with the faltering hope that it might make me love poetry. Might make me get poetry in a way I have never quite been able to. Might make me moderately able to construct a verse. I ended up not doing a lot of the exercises as I got so stressed out with them. My problem has always been how one tells good poetry from bad. Because they often sound much alike to me. This did very little to assure me that poetry is anything other than a persuit for upper middle class people with too much time on their hands.

That said, if you're already a keen ameture in the world of poetry, it's probably a lovely read. It certainly makes concepts accessable.

With a love for the topic Fry handles, drenched in his witticism and apt opinions, this small book is delightful for anyone who wants to start their first foray into understanding how poetry works.

Should not have read the limericks on pages 266-7 in the train

I love Stephen Fry and this book is a wonderful introduction to learning poetry. He actually manages to make iambic pentameter interesting!
