Peng Shepherd has done it again! She really commits to her concepts and thinks about how her characters will react within the world she’s created. Even though it’s a sci fi/dystopian/almost fantasy read, I was more emotionally connected to these characters than I was expecting to be. I was completely engrossed in the story, but I knocked my rating down to 4.5 because there were some fantasy/magical elements that weren’t really explained and some storylines that didn’t fit well for me.

I defintely did not see the shadow/person who collects being a god and then Max's shadow being attached to another's body. That was interesting and weird at the same time. I like the ties the author did to the Indian religion with the elephant god and the first man to lose his shadow.

Amazing book, hard to get through emotionally. I would never read this again but if you’re into survival/apocalypse stuff and aren’t stressed out by characters starving or dying… give it a read.

I couldn't really put it down once I got started. The plot builds up and once you're hooked, you need to see it through to the end. Love perseveres through the most difficult times and the best of humanity will pull through. This one is going to stick with me for a while!

This book was SAD. I mean, I guess the ending was kinda hopeful, but mostly it made my heart feel heavy and my chest ache.
