I loved everything about this audiobook! The story expertly weaves through several families, following the lives of many people, yet the author managed to make me care about each of them. Every story, every thread in the tapestry, is expertly placed to create a beautiful picture.
I love the way that history and fiction are seamlessly combined. Characters are placed in just the right positions to get insights all across the world war. It gave me new insights and perspectives on things I thought I already knew about.
I don't know how Ken Follett achieves such an informative, interesting, and insightful presentation, but he does. This book (and the entire series) should feel long, but I devoured them all. I wanted more even after hundreds of hours of listening. This story is a masterpiece.
John Lee also narrates this book perfectly. He is one of my favorite narrators ever. He clearly takes the time to know each character and develop a distinct speaking style and personality for each voice. His pacing is right on, and his voice is so nice that I could probably happily listen to him read the phone book. I wouldn't change a single thing about this narration.

Disappointed. Barely scrapped to the end of this. It started so well but fell short of his previous books I have read.
I listened to this one as an audio book, so I might have missed some details I would have taken in if I was reading the actual book. I liked it, but I didn't find it as fascinating as Follett's "Pillars of the Earth".
I wound up thoroughly enjoying this historical fiction piece. It told stories from points of view that I had not normally heard before, Welsh, Russian, German. At times I would have likes more real history and less fiction/novel but all in all I wound up loving the book. Some great insights into WWI and how the international politics of the time was so jammed up. Some great characters also. I will definitely read the next 2 in the trilogy.

I really love this book. I started to read this book before i went on holiday to St. Petersburg. I like the fact that i can imagine where the story took place and so on. The book is huge but i really do like reading it.
