Ken Follett fasst das Geschehen rund um den ersten Weltkrieg mit fiktiven Figuren, die den Protagonisten der damaligen Welt erstaunlich nahe kamen. Er selbst meint, dass alles, was in dem Buch von realen Personen gesagt wird, so gesagt wurde oder es möglich war, dass es so gesagt wurde. Er schreibt mitreißend, alle Figuren sind auf ihre Weise anziehend. Die Hauptfiguren machen es einem leicht, sich um sie zu sorgen. Mehrmals dachte ich: "F&€#, jetzt ist er gestorben. Dabei mochte ich ihn doch." Follett führt den Leser durch die Höhe- und Tiefpunkte der Hauptpersonen, die das Weltgeschehen maßgeblich beeinflussten. Gegen Ende wurde das Buch sehr schwer zu lesen. Ein paar Nebengeschichten verlaufen im Sande, da sie nicht mehr in das Buch passten.

love how this book tells the stories of 5 very different families all affected by the same major event. it's great how they occasionally bump into each other and story lines interact too!
Puts the “historical” in historical fiction. This book breaks down World War One and the Russian Revolution in a way that I’ve never heard before, through a variety of characters from all over the world. The only thing that holds me back is that it dragged on a bit towards the end. Overall a great read and at some point I definitely want to read the other two books in the trilogy.

I wasn't sure I'd be able to get into this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. As is always the case with Mr. Follett, the book is meticulously researched and has quite a bit of detail. I was less interested in the battle sequences and more interested in the interpersonal relationships, but on the whole I love how he created an international cast of characters whose lives continually intersected.
