This was okay. We read it for our bookclub theme of "cosy crime" and while it definitely fit the bill in some places, it was slightly darker than I thought it would be in others! I wished that getting to know the characters was woven into the story a bit more, as there was a big chunk of history of the main character at the start and then that wasn't really developed in the rest of the story. What also surprised me was that the mysteries we re quite short, almost short story like and often came to quite an abrupt end. That's not necessarily a criticism, just something I wasn't expecting about the book.

A small way into this book, I had to look up the author, because I really didn't want to trust my first impressions of a culture and land that I knew nothing about to be coming from an inauthentic source, in other words, who is this white guy telling a story from a Botswana women's point of view? And he seemed legit.
I own up to my complete ignorance of this culture, and it was nice to read about something taking place in Africa, where people weren't starving, fighting, or mutilating anybody, I feel like a lot of books about Africa seem really terrifying. This side of Africa was a lot more positive and relatable.
I found it a nice entertaining read, I wasn't completely pulled in to the characters, though I was reading outside my preferred genres with this book, so, that's not surprising. I appreciated the different perspectives, and my brain took from it a lot of information to reflect on, but I probably wont read the rest of the books in the series,.

This was really fun! I listened to the audiobook and I really liked the narrator which may be coloring my review. The only issue I had with the book was that chapter 2 was extremely long and told from another character's perspective and it was honestly kind of a boring chapter. But after that it was great, so that chapter felt very out of place. I would have rated it 4 stars, but since that chapter was so long and this book is so short overall, I knocked off half a star. I'll listen to the next book in the series.
