When people ask me about this series and my love of it, I always describe it as story books for adults. It reminds of the classic stories we read as children which had a moral message, and had characters who you wanted to get to know in person.
The way McCall Smith writes the stories of the main character Ma Ramotswe and her friends and family is imbued with a gentle softness which reads like the hug of a good friend. You can laugh with them, cry with them, and experience the landscape of Botswana which I don't think could be more precise than if you were to visit the land itself.
A great book to enjoy with a cup of tea.

I liked it, but it was slow reading. I didn't fall in love with the characters as much as I expected to. Finishing the book made me want to read the next... I think it's set up that way!

I've had this on my shelf since a library book sale. I gave it to mom for her cochlear implant therapy, and she enjoyed it, so I finally got around to reading it, too. It's less mystery than smart woman who's not afraid to ask questions and follow answers, but it gets extra points for a great voice and self-assured female protagonist.
I like the setting and concept of this story but it's so painfully obviously written by a man that I couldn't get in to the story. Everything is in such gendered boxes, and even though the main protagonist is a convention bucking woman he just can't muster giving her a three dimensional inner life.
