I found this book to be quite charming. It might not be for most fans of the mystery genre, as the book is not particularly violent and it does not follow one major case throughout. The leisurely pace of the storytelling exemplifies the pace of Precious Ramotswe's life in her beloved Botwana. I enjoyed the descriptions of the lush African landscape. I also enjoyed learning how Mma Ramotswe's mind worked, how she used her intuition and her powers of observation to solve her cases. A very delightful read!

Would give this book somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. I really liked the simplicity of the writing, the characters, and the setting... but felt it was just a little too rosy-colored for my liking.

It took me a while to decide on the genre of this book. It's not really a detective novel. It's more of an introduction to Botswana culture. On the surface, Smith presents a series of quaint stories about a female detective, solving cases that range from small-stakes domestic conflicts to matters of life and death. Below the surface, the novel conveys darker elements about the challenges of living in Botswana. By creating this kind of tension between surface and depth, Smith does a good job showing how current residents of this country can move through these challenges without becoming pessimistic.
As the details of the mysteries unfold, the reader learns about the hardships of this nation and a little about nearby South Africa. Precious Romatswe investigates mysteries that require her to negotiate through the intricacies of gender indequalities, poverty, colonialism, and exploitation of miners. She also takes us along as she delights in Botwsana's landscape, food, and local customs. Yes, there are some scary, bad people she encounters, but most salient are Smith's descriptions of individuals Mma Romatswe meets who have positive characteristics such as family loyalty, intelligence, industry, and compassion.
Because a white man (Rhodesian born, Scottish national, U of Botswanan professor of law) authored this book, I am not sure how Botswanans of multigenerational lineage feel about his representation of their country / culture. Nevertheless, I now know more about Botswana than I did prior to reading. Maybe I can find some literature by a local writer with deeper roots so that I can further complicate my understanding of this specific African country.

I’m obsessed with Mma Ramotswe. I want to be her. In some ways, I am her (I hope). She’s clever and hilarious and effortless. Emilia Bedilia with her shit together.
