Dnfing this book was a hard decision to make. The writing was actually good, and parts of the story were interesting enough that I’m still curious about how it unfolds. However, the overall reading experience was pretty dull.
I believe the book would have benefited from being shorter, at times, it feels like you’re reading the same thing over and over because the narrative lingers too long. The first volume, in particular, could have been 100 pages shorter.
The book lacks detailed descriptions and an atmosphere overall, which made it harder to stay engaged. It’s certainly a bold story to tell at such a time, and it explains why so controversial, but unfortunately, the execution didn’t fully deliver. Maybe if I had read this book before exploring other classics from the same period, I might have finished it, and even liked it more. But with those other works in mind, this one just lacks... That said, I would still recommend it, personally, it just wasn’t for me.
