I think I wasn’t in the right mind frame to read this book right now. While I enjoyed it and it didn’t make me reflect on my life and my friend’s hardships, it was really sad. Also, I understand forgiving your mother because she is no longer here but I don’t think parental abuse should be tolerated or bypassed because it was the way she loved her child. She shouldn’t have hit her child no matter the cultural norms.
The writing is very good and really pulled at your heart strings. The author is very strong to have gone through all of this and still coming out on top of life.

My partner was listening to this and I ended up listening with him. I don't usually listen to audiobooks, but it felt more emotional, especially because my partner lost his dad last year.
Some parts were difficult to hear, like the conflicts between Michelle and her parents. But it was also relatable as both my partner and I have immigrant parents (though obviously there's some differences between Korean culture and Mexican). The parts describing the mother's illness were also difficult.
Overall it was vivid, great descriptions, and cathartic. Also I wouldn't recommend listening/reading when you're hungry or before bed because I kept getting hungry.

The overarching theme of connecting food with culture and belonging, next to the grief of loosing a parent was so interesting to explore. Sadly, the author went in many tangents that weren't as interesting or relevant and seemed to be included to make Zauner look edgy and non-chalant in a way that seemed performative instead of sincere.
As a memoir I guess everyone is allowed to write however they want but after repeatedly being told by Zauner herself about her background writing articles I expected more.

DNF a little under the 50% mark

I didn't stop this book because there was anything wrong with the book. The writing is visceral and powerful as is the story. I'm just not mentally in a place to read it.
