It always feels weird to be rating a memoir, but this rating reflects the fact that I am not the target audience for this book. It was well-written (although there were some structural issues in the first half, in my opinion) and emotional, and it was insightful to hear the experiences of someone who grew up half-Korean and half-American.
The book focused a lot on food, and I love food… but I’m a vegetarian. So a lot of the food descriptions I just didn’t enjoy (especially about live or only-recently-dead seafood). I also, fortunately (touchwood), haven’t experienced prolonged grief or heartbreak. I couldn’t relate to a lot of the book’s themes, but I could see how it would be comforting to people who could. I also felt that the author and her mother’s relationship was quite dysfunctional, which wasn’t really addressed much.
Overall, I appreciated the book more as it went along. I thought the author was brave to share her innermost feelings, and I can see why the book has been a hit.

Another relatable mother/daughter relationship book but also with a Tiger Mom spin. Thankful to Michelle for allowing us a glimpse into her life.
