It’s hard to put into words what I felt while reading this book.
First the writing is so compelling and charged, it’s as if by the way it’s written you immediately know where you’re getting yourself into. That can also be because of how it starts “I’ve known Death a long time, but now Death knows me.” So, yes, this is a book about death, the tragedy of it, and its consequences on those left behind, but because it is about death it is also very much so about life.
A life that seems ordinary and happy and then is wounded and broken for three young siblings after their parents death. A life unchosen, for Jules particularly, who daydreams different worlds where his parents haven’t died and his relationship with his elder brother and sister is unchanged. In the real world however, he is lost, fragile, not the boy he was before, and his siblings too have escaped him, until he meets Ava at the boarding school he is sent to, and the real world becomes ever so slightly more appealing.
Life doesn’t stagnate, doesn’t concede, is not a zero sum game, the choices and tragedies are real, life and death are always intertwined, and fortunately or unfortunately it is the nature of it.
This is a brilliant family saga filled with tragedy, but also love, new chances, adventures, beginning and ends.
Yes, I loved it. But, I also hated it because I have not come to terms with death, and I can’t rationally nod at the rational conclusions of life and death, although logically not only do I want to, I need to, I must.

Heartbreaking.. and all the while it creates a sense of comfort.
Throughout the whole story I loved the overlying theme of coming to terms with the inevitable; i.e. death.
The overall melancholic story, sprinkled with hints of the joys of life brought by others, was the perfect amount of ups and downs to make you value every little moment that life gives you.

"Life is not a zero-sum game. It owes us nothing, and things just happen the way they do.
Sometimes they're fair and everything makes sense;
sometimes they're so unfair we question everything. I pulled the mask off the face of Fate. and all I found beneath it was chance."
