A retelling of the Salem Witch Trials & the infamous Tituba, the enslaved woman blamed & killed for it.
However, Condé's story is so much more than that. It is an expansive look into Tituba's world, offering her more life than the historical record granted. We meet Tituba in her homeland of Barbados, then follow her through her capturing and enslavement to the Parris family in Boston, then Salem.

I'm such a fan of these creative historical bending, especially when it's not absolutely centered around the US. Tituba is involved in several romantic relationships, organizing slave revolts, and magic that connects her with past ancestors. I love her so much. She's so tender, yet stern, so romantic, often listening to her heart before her head. And has a horrible yet pretty varied taste in men (me). 😔
