Atherton Lin, as always, writes incredibly about queer culture, politics, and society - this was a great read. However, I think I was expecting it to be a memoir, but it was more a socio-political history of gay marriage, mixed in with his personal life. But of course I was wrong - “the gayest love story ever told” cannot solely be personal; the personal is political. That being said, I really did want to hear more about their relationship - or maybe hear a bit more from Famous’s POV. Maybe I’m really soppy and wanted some more soppy romantic moments, especially towards the end. I think, maybe, I was just more prepared for love than legal history!!!

This is a dense book. I really enjoyed reading it but there where moments where I had to take a break to digest all the stuff this story has. I also find the pace a bit inconsistent, especially in the second third of the book. This memoir is full of emotions and it's a well balanced story that combines personal experiences with queer historical events.

Part memoir told in second person perspective (though the 'you' mentioned throughout the book is not necessarily the reader but his partner) and part history about gay marriage and LGBT rights in the last few decades. It's an intimate look at Lin's personal story that uses the second person point of view to really let them in on the more sensitive parts of his relationship, evoking a sense of passion and even indignation at the unjust laws that seems to trample on the rights of people just wanting to live their lives.
A deeply personal and intimate look at gay life in the 90s and 2000s and on.
