Thinking about the title of this novel, my mind only wanders back to Landry. Though, I feel as if the entire message of this book, at least for me, was about grace and the importance of lending a helping hand. Though, sometimes love or what we perceive to be love clouds judgement - this we see in multiple forms within the novel.
Though the brothers needed the Walkers, I feel that the Walkers needed the brothers more. This story shares many moments of them coming together and learning from one another. Though, the dangers of the town that still didn’t respect freed slaves as free citizens, still tried to find a way to break up these healthy connections. And the saddest moments in the story still pushed the story to a new depth. Allowing the reader to see that through it all, genuine love will ensure that your dreams come true.

I really enjoyed this book. Takes place during reconstruction, but the time period wasn’t shoved in our faces the entire time. There was a freshness to how the characters were written and the prose use; not an overuse or unnecessary use of the N-word or what I call “slave speak”. I also liked how the author didn’t end the book using black trauma as a plot point. Many times reading fiction such as this you expect the ending to be negative because “the life of a slave was hard”, blah blah blah. But to me the author did a great job moving beyond what was expected and giving us better endings to the characters. For a first time author, Nathan Harris created a world I could easily see, hear and feel. He gave us a unique story and a nice ending. I look forward to his future works.

This book has such an understated poignancy to it, while still managing to leave the reader with a sense of hope at its conclusion. Simple, subdued, yet powerful.
Not sure what I can say about this but nothing will do it justice. Wonderfully, beautifully written with a good story and good characters. I was just enthralled with the whole thing. Definitely one to reread.
Much more than I expected. The early Reconstruction setting was a great choice - the sadness and the loss mixed with the tentative hope was beautiful. And to learn that this is a first novel from one so young is quite impressive.
Excellent. READ THIS BOOK! Plus it is an Oprah Pick. When has she ever lead you wrong??
One of my favorite reads of 2022. I can't wait to read more from Nathan Harris
