Adding this to my best books pile, with East of Eden and Cutting for Stone.
Beautiful language and such good dialogue, even better to read aloud.
I cannot choose a favorite character, they were SO well-developed: George, Isabel, Landry, Prentiss, Mildred, even Ridley the donkey.
This book takes a little bit longer to read because it shouldn’t be rushed through. Every sentence is so well thought out and written with care. I’d love to re-read it looking at the symbolism of water or analyzing freedom for each character. There were a couple of chapters that I continuously cried through.
I love how Harris created scenes you could see just like a movie, that were tragic and yet still moments that made you laugh or feel like, Yes!!! There is so much to talk about with this book.

Amazing Book. This book was sometimes really difficult to read. Reading about violence and racism and inequity is hard and upsetting but wow was this book worth it all. George, Prentiss, Landry, Isabelle and even Caleb are written so well and even the variety of side characters are full and dynamic(mostly in how awful they are). I loved how much each character grew and changed. The last paragraph where Isabelle talks about hope almost makes the entire book worth the read.

Consumed via audiobook.
Lovely prose that was easy to wile away hours listening to. A variety of interesting characters. The plot felt directionless at times. Things happen. People struggle and change, or don't. Still, I have the feeling that this book will stick with me a little while.

Originally gave this 4 stars, but it haunts me still, so I had to update it.
The writing was phenomenal! The story was a bit slow for my taste though

Really enjoyed how the book never telegraphed where it was going, allowing it to feel like the story of real lives, unfolding in unexpected and yet honest ways.
