What wonderful writing. Gripping storytelling with characters you root for and mourn with. Excellent development. Highly recommend

I wish I could give this 4.5 stars. Having just read Light Perpetual and been floored by its beautiful prose and concept, I just can't quite put this one the same level. It's an excellent novel, heartbreaking at moments, and impressive for a first novel. But the brothers felt borrowed from Of Mice and Men. Caleb and August are a Confederate Brokenack Mountain. And the small town literally becomes a pitboiler. I kept feeling like I had read this before. It eas good but lacked the wow factor that I associate with 5 star books.

This is an excellent book, there are already plenty of reviews so I will just add that I would like to see more George and Isabelle’s in the world.

heartbreaking and terrifying, but most importantly, humbling. even hopeful towards the end. a powerful debut.

En lågmäld berättelse, full av umbäranden och drömmar, från slutet av det amerikanska inbördeskriget. Författaren broderar ut språket på ett vackert poetiskt vis som jag nog tror skulle passa bättre att läsa med ögonen än med öronen.
