Honestly so good. Great insights into Thrawn as a character and strategist, and a truly enjoyable read all around. 10/10 would read again.

I am deeply biased because I love Thrawn as a character, but I think this book was just neato. A solid Star Wars book. 10/10 will think about for the rest of the day.

Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising is a very fun book to read. It expertly builds up the tension in the story, despite being a prequel to existing appearances of Thrawn in canon, and makes you curious to see exactly how Thrawn succeeds despite the trials he faces in the novel. It is always fun to read his adventures, and then realize how the observations he made helps out in that. Similar to a Sherlock Holmes novel, most of the information is there - it’s just a matter of picking it up and understanding how it’s exploitable.
However, the book is extremely slow as a start. While most of this is building up the initial character of Thrawn, as well as the clues surrounding the cultures, the book only really starts to pick up after Thrawn meets the primary antagonist of the book. Once that begins, the rest of the book is extremely fun.
Also, for fans of Zahn’s other Star Wars novels there are multiple references to both canon and Legends events concerning his character during the Clone Wars timeframe.
