Learning about Thomas's life before the maze adds a ton of nuance and depth to his character. I'm almost tempted to read The Maze Runner again, and I finished that book last week.

This book was pointless, and the worst part was that it was boring. While reading the original trilogy, I found that the constant go-go-go of the plot and constant violence became boring after awhile. Especially when several nameless characters died and we were supposed to care about them. This book had the opposite problem. Most of the book was told through summaries of what was happening, in which Thomas repeatedly did a whole lot of nothing. In the brief times that there were actual action/plot beats... I couldn't find it in me to care.
That said, I did enjoy the ending. Dashner is really good at making me hate the same character for four books... although I don't think that was his intention.

Moderate: Cannibalism, Gore, Grief, Gun violence, Murder, Suicide attempt, Toxic friendship, and Violence
Minor: Excrement, Kidnapping, and Medical content
