I liked the characters a lot and felt they were well crafted. Their dynamics were interesting, their motivations were clear and compelling (while also sometimes mysterious, to give it some extra flavor). Caroline was hilarious actually. My biggest complaint is that..... sadly.... this author could not escape the trap of the male savior character (even tho I liked him a lot!) who just REFUSED to let a woman do her wrongs 🙄 AND ALSO the super macho Rambo dude who all the guys fanboy over.
Definitely would have been rated higher if the author didn't fall into those charcter trope traps bc the story and plot was entertaining as fuck. I loved the concept and thought it was executed well. Parts of this were quite visceral and horrifying. I also enjoyed the subtle foreshadowing, the little hints we were given throughout the narrative about what was to come. (The whole "last sunset" thing was particularly good). For some reason that lion mythology was just fascinating to me, I loved it.
I get what the author was going for in the end, but do think it could have been executed better. Things were so strong up until that 75% point (about anyways) and then it really fell off. He brought it back around and the book ended fairly strong, I just think it could have been better, the same ideas could have been explored without falling into some of those male-centric character tropes.
