Ok this will be my THIRD read, officially making it the only book I have read three times.
I listened to the audio and realized I missed way too much, bc what the fuck just happened. So after completing the audiobook the first time, I immediately went in for a second. I STILL feel like I missed way too much. So here we are. The third read. As words this time so hopefully I can retain wtf happens in this insane ass book.
Anyways, my review is the same as when I finished the book the first two times in 2024: “what the fuck”

As another reviewer wrote, this book is an exercise in trust. It’s deeply human and gory and nonsensical and reflective all at once.
I’ve never read a book like it. That’s given me so little answers without making me mad. You get just enough information to keep you hooked, but if someone asked you to step back and explain the entire plot and purpose of the book, you couldn’t. You just have to experience it on your own.
Although most of the story is fantastical, there are definitely some human truths reflected in this that are very relevant to 2025.
I would recommend going in blind on this one. Don’t go in with any expectations because it’s better that way. All you need to know is that a man kidnapped 12 kids and has convinced them he’s God and they can do the same if they study hard enough.
Read this if you like big reveals at the end, feeling confused and then having an aha! Moment, or if you just like girls scheming and being crafty and weird.
4.5 stars

Very fecked up and weird but keeps the run of itself. Highly enjoyable
Disliked first half, fought to not DNF: gratuitous violence and sex to be edgy, 100% plot vs 0% character development, I don't like or care for or not invested in any of the characters, man writing rape.
50%-70% I got invested, and I enjoyed the last quarter.
Felt kinda like it was trying to be Miéville in mood and tone but failed.

this book made my brain explode. it’s like a mix between the umbrella academy and the magicians with a sprinkle of this is how you lose the time war.
