Hands down, one of the best books I have read in a long while and one of the few books that kept surprising me to the very end.
The setup is like some sort of sick, twisted hybrid between Miss Peregrin's School for Peculiar Children and The Umbrella Academy, except much more raw, harsh and awesome (in the orginal sense of the word). I didn't really know what it was until I was finished and even then I wasn't quite sure what how to process it.
I went to bed like after a very interesting first date.
The book feels bigger on the inside.
I keep saying one of my favourite thing about Peter Jackson's King Kong film is, that the giant ape is slipping around on the ice but it's not funny.
This book does the same. You have a male character in an army jacket and a tutu and no, it's not funny, it's horrendously terrifying.
It explores its own strange universe exactly as much as it has to, wandering off in unexpected directions all the time, leaving things untold, resolving the perfect amount of open questions and spits you out shaken but satified at the end.
It's neither fantasy nor sci-fi, or maybe it's both. You can somehow find the Linux programmer behind Hawkins's writing and world-building at any given time, while at the sime time it's amazing to me that he hasn't published any fiction before.
It made me laugh out loud once. It was funny a lot more often. Most of the humour isn't the kind that jumps out at you and I definitely wouldn't call it a comedy but it's woven into the entire style of writing in like a faint undertow.
Most of all it's cruel, strong, smart and compelling and takes you on one of those journeys where you feel like reality has lost all meaning and that's fine.

This was not for me. Very adventure packed but less deep character development than i like. interesting concept but the execution was a miss for me.
