THERE'S SO MUCH PACKED INTO THIS BOOK!!! HOLY CRAP!!! I consistently felt myself immersed anyways.

The way Hawkins writes is captivating. What a unique and horrifying setting and story. This is one of those books where I wanted to (and did) stay up way too late reading simply because I couldn't stop. I wanted to know more. I DO think it was a little too convoluted at times, but I think that's partially because I've never read anything quite like this. Delightfully bizzare and wild.

I am very torn about this review. I found this book difficult to rate. The overall story was very good, but most of the book was just very weird. While I enjoy weird books and often seek them out, this was almost too bizarre even for me. Like other readers I also felt that not all questions were answered by the end of the book. I also agree that the ending was a bit strange - while it seemed that most of the plot wrapped up at 70%, the book went on for quite a bit more. While most of the book held my attention, parts of it seemed to drag a bit. This book really needs to come with a lot of trigger warnings: gore/violence (lots of it), abuse, animal death, rape (off page).

Char has excellent premises: a library of knowledge, but as you've rarely seen it in action before! However I'm not completely convinced.

From confusing beginnings, this moved into a very strong middle section and then, for whatever reason, fell apart toward the end of the book. Granted, many interesting things can be said about the way in which conversations, narrative focus, and character-building change through to the conclusion, but I also wonder about narrative structure changing the goalposts, so to speak. Anyway, Char is an excellent book and worth your time especially if you're open to fluidly exploratory models of storytelling and character building.
