Took me a few months to finish, so I’m sure I lost track of some of the characters and didn’t appreciate it as much as I could have. Beautiful writing though
Moderate: Animal cruelty

So almost perfect
Wasn’t sure this book was for me going into it but ended up really enjoying it. I liked the use of short stories which dealt with a range of interesting characters: from a man who wouldn’t leave his house to an American translator living in Tokyo. Releasing how characters were connected to a previous story was always entertaining and also how the calico cat would find its way into the chapter. Tokyo was also well described to set the scene and the feel of the city.
Ambitious, clever and intricate but ultimately frustrating. There are some interesting pieces in the first half of the book. But the sprawling tales lose focus and the flat tone of much of the prose isn’t very engaging.
