This would make a cute play. Loved the scene at the hair salon. Really liked the Spanish glossary at the back of the book.

Honestly I just need to stop reading plays and expecting a fully-fledged novel type experience. It's not the same =(

I read this as part of the Read 180 Universal Library. It’s a sweet play about 9th grade Rudy and his preparation for a date with 11th grader Patricia. His friend Alex gives him dating advice, although Alex himself doesn’t have much experience. His mom is protective, his singing uncle Juan is understanding, and the old man who bought apples from him is lonely. By the end of the play, all of them converge on Alex and Patricia’s date by coincidence, but turn out being a supportive community who ensure that the date goes off well.

A quick read, but fun.
