"Maybe, if they could find a way to be gentle, the stars would be better off with them."

Epic and brilliant and bittersweet.

Really enjoyed the expanded scope of this one. Felt even more Space Opera-y

Enjoyable, but a little flat compared to other books in the series. I like the political aspects of the book and the shifting allegiances. It was good to get the crew of the Roci back together and Bobbie and Clarissa make good additions. Clarissa reminds me of River from Firefirely. With the new characters (Marco, Filip, Pa) Alex and Amos didn't get as much time as I'd have liked. Plenty of mysteries left for future books.
The ending seemed anti-climatic

i have come to realize that i do not hate James Holden anymore.
i really appreciate that as the books and years in the story go by the characters grow and mature and there's a clean cut character progression.
i didn't enjoy an installment in this series since book 2 as much as i did this, so i'm glad i stayed with it.
although where i learned to love the Holden, i am now blessed with other characters i can hate - and also find them so so stupid. hopefully, it is all intentional, so that i may also explore their character growth with them.
i see many consider this as filler, but to me this was much faster paced than the last volume
- i mean it's war,
people!
i also don't mind the
deus ex machina
ending: i think there was just enough conscious planning and calculation that it felt earned.
Naomi has been looking at this issue for 2 books now, so i think she deserved getting this win.

I liked this one- how do you handle the aftershocks of the largest terrorist acts in human history? The crew is back together, and there's some POVs from old friends too.

Fascinated to get into the head of Filip- a teen soldier, who still wants to do teenage things but also fervently believes in his father, despite a spotty track record for actual successes.

I do kind of wish there was more weird alien stuff in this- anticipating the next few books will deliver. Though, at this point I should consider going back to the short stories/novellas probably before starting the next book.
