This book was a huge eye opener into the complexities of being a Korean-Japanese. This book has allowed me to understand more about the difficulties faced in Japanese and Korean culture before, during, and after WW2 and the Korean War.  I’m very interested in learning more about what life was truly like for the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, both in their homeland, but also in the United States.

This book is amazingly good. I cannot recommend it enough. You wont even realize you are learning history as you are immediately taken in with the story. I will be buying my own copy. This is significant because I only buy books I absolutely love; all others are borrowed.

Well... I devoured this book - what a page turner! A story of suffering and resilience. I fell in love with this story, it occupied my mind even when I wasn't reading it.

Some favourite quotes:

"Living everyday in the presence of those who refuse to acknowledge your humanity takes great courage."

"Sunja-ya, a woman's life is endless work and suffering. There is suffering and then more suffering. It's better to expect it, you know"

"A woman's lot is to suffer." - this one I think encapsulates the feeling of this book quite well.
