If you're looking for a devastatingly good book to cry to, this is the one for you.

The book is a fairly straightforward read, after all there is nothing complicated about it, nor is there any kind of plot twist that changes the tone, but unfortunately its structure leaves too many narrative points open that make the story feel incredibly unfinished.

Perhaps it can be argued that this is how it happens in life itself, but when you leave almost everything you're creating up to the reader's interpretation, it's inevitable that the reader will feel like you didn't do all the work. At least that's how it happened to me.

It contains important history about Korean-Japanese dynamics. I keep having to force myself to read it though so I think the characters are just not interesting enough for me. I’m kinda sick about reading about testy marriages tbh. It’s just not relevant to me.

this is a very well-written book about koreans' situation in japan, a point of view that very rarely gets told and as such, it was a very interesting read

It’s an interesting story and I really enjoyed learning some of the history and the relationship between Korea and Japan, but the writing was, at first not bad, and then became substantially worse ;/
emotional reflective medium-paced

Immersive multigenerational family epic spanning centuries and continents
