This book somewhat reminds me of Homegoing, but it follows generations of a family in a very linear fashion and blends from one generation to the next. I did find some of the character jumping a little difficult to follow sometimes, but I did listen to the book rather than read it. Overall really good

This book hit me with all sorts of feels... where do I even begin?! This book is fantastic, I recommend it to anyone. The author does such a great job meshing together historical narrative and fictional narrative in a way that’s all too real! The book will keep you on edge, wanting to know more of what happens next. The author creates the characters in a way where you create attachments to them as you see their lives unfold.
As an Asian American, many concepts regarding culture and family really hit home for me. I could identify with many of the themes highlighted in this book and it made me really appreciate the light shown on issues of generational and cultural differences within Asian culture (of course this book being specific to Korean families living in Japan). Loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read!

3.5 (rounded up for subject matter) = Boring in some parts, but interesting enough to finish. I never knew how serious the hate was between Japanese and Koreans. There were so many anticlimactic moments....maybe this was intentional?? 🤔 Overall, it was a good read.

Although I learned a lot about the history of Korea and Japan this writing style was not enjoyable to read. The whole book felt quite abrupt especially at each chapter end and had no flow or rhythm to it. Some elements would keep my interest then the book would take a turn and move on to a new story line, very disconnected. Overall it was alright but I wouldn’t recommend it.
