“A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse.”

I tried to get into this book without having an opinion in advance, as it gets hyped a lot. But I was amazed.
Each of the characters have their own ambitions and chances are high you’ll like at least one of them. For me, I enjoyed them all. They all have led different lives but still ended up together in a way that made sense and wasn’t too farfetched.
Also, I liked the little mentions of things that happened in the Shadow and Bones trilogy two years prior.
Nothing major or that important to the plot, but it was a nice touch.
There might be a lot of new terms at first but once I got into it, it wasn’t that hard to follow.
The different emotions in the scenes were balanced well. Sometimes dark, funny, tense, sad, maybe even a little bit of hope for some of the characters sometimes. It made the book easy to get through and gripping.
Couldn’t put it down and I am starting with the second one right away.

“She wouldn't wish love on anyone. It was the guest you welcomed and then couldn't be rid of.”

The main cast of characters are so effing diverse it's incredible. And as always, Leigh's writing is so stunning.

I really enjoyed this book overall but was slow to get into it. The first couple hundred pages you have to drag your way through kicking and screaming but after that the characters won’t let you put the book down. The book falls into one of my all time firm favourite tropes “indentured found family with playing card gangs”. Though I would say I prefer more of a build up in character relations, for the most part they went from being mostly indifferent to suddenly caring for each other.

There's not much to stay apart from that this is probably THE best book I've ever read (with it's sequel). It's the perfect mix of plot driven and character driven which is why I think I enjoyed it so much. It's interesting and captivating while at the same time making you care immensely about these characters. They've all been through so much and following their journey has been my favourite thing in the whole world. I don't think I'll ever be able to stop thinking about them.
