I’m not going to lie I was a bit apprehensive to go into this book because I really didn’t enjoy the Shadow and Bone triology, but everyone and their mother was telling me that it gets better and that the Six of Crows duology and the King of Scars duology was better. I am so glad I am easily influenced because it was a really good read.

This book has multiple point of views, but our main MC is a criminal prodigy named Kaz Brekker. He has been offered a chance at a deadly heist: break into the Ice Court which is a military stronghold that is locked tighter than Fort Knox and retrieve a hostage whose knowledge could change Grisha magic forever. To succeed would mean riches beyond Kaz’s wildest dreams, but he can’t pull it off alone. He hires a team. Some people he has known for years, and some people were fired for this job only. One of them is a convict with a thirst for revenge, one is a sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager, one of is a runaway with a privileged past, one is a spy known as the Wraith, one is a Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums and the last one in the team is a thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. They are all dangerous outcasts; it is one impossible heist. Together they might be unstoppable, if they don’t kill each other first.

The plot for this book was like The Breakfast Club met Ocean 11. I loved that all the personalities in these six main characters were fully developed. It didn’t feel like a character was there to move the story along, they were all working together and hating each other and having sexual tension between each other. My favourite characters were Kaz and Inej. I just love their bond and that they both have feelings for each other, but both are too stubborn to admit anything and both trying to think of other things.

I always find the first book in a new fantasy series is always the hardest and the most difficult to get into because you are learning new characters, and everything can be slightly confusing. The way that I rate fantasy books is how quickly it takes for me to pick up on things and get into the plot. I feel like the first 25% was a struggle for me and I think that’s because it took me a while to get back in to the Grishaverse and getting back to the different roles within the world.

This book ending on a cliffhanger with how big the book was felt cruel. I wanted more and I can see why it ended on a cliffhanger and now I'm dying to read the next book.

Read this in HS and DNF'ed because I thought it was too slow. Read it again in college and realized I was stupid and teenage heists are cool

A wild ride from start to finish. Leant a little heavily on the changing points of view to give the reader the element of surprise/suspence towards the end, but was still thoroughly enjoyable though all of those moments. Characters that I loved/loved to hate, worldbuilding that blended nicely into the story. Relationships (friendships, romance, rivalries, etc) that all felt real and were compelling. Can't wait to read the sequel!
