there were some interesting parts, but not enough for me to give it a high rating. 71 topics was simply too many to pack into such a short book. it felt very random & not a single topic was fleshed out

Overall a superficial read, and even though there should only be general information about different topics, it felt that some of them were just opinions with barely any science to back them up.
Number's don't lie, yes, but they can be manipulated easily to prove something else.
I was disappointed to read about the cow's milk and the meat sections, and also the chapters talking about the impossibility to ditch fossil fuel. Clearly, the overall mood regarding climate change felt very pessimistic and superficial, but in a way that makes you think that we're stuck in a status quo and we've no way getting out of it.
Either the research was not enough or the numbers were presented in such a manner that appealed to his own perspective.
Some of the chapters presented nice facts to know, but they consisted maybe 10% of the book.

Vaclav Smil has a way of taking complex data and making it accessible and easy-to-read. These articles are short and focused on a specific question or idea, and they contain a lot of information. Smil talks repeatedly about the inability to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and he brings up our need to switch to a more plant-based diet a few times. He is aware of the impact our actions have on the globe perhaps and is able to explain this in a simplified manner, but does not resort to scaring the reader; his duty is to inform. I learned quite a few things from this book including the fact that China has emplaced more concrete in the last two years than the US did in the whole of the 20th century. That one will stay with me for a while!
