Not every nonfiction can be a page turner, but this one is. If are a woman, or know a woman, you should probably read this. If you have little girls in your life, you should definitely read this.

beauty is expected of women and this depletes their emotional, cognitive, and financial resources. we should comment less about women’s looks and more about their other great qualities so they can give more of themselves to the things that matter to them.

I read this book entirely in one sitting this morning, and I feel like this was the perfect read at this point in my life. As a teenage girl, I've encountered the beauty sickness that Engeln explores from numerous angles - mother-daughter relationships, advertisements, and peer interactions - in both myself and others around me. Though this book leans rather heavily on individual stories to move itself forwards, I think the stories are poignant and effective. At times, I did find myself wishing that we could move faster through the interviews and get to the research findings, but I think the (often relatable) experiences contribute an intimate feel to what could've been a strictly scientific (and much shorter) book. Additionally, most of this book focuses on fleshing out the causes and effects of beauty sickness rather than solutions, so readers might walk away feeling more aware of this problem but not how to mitigate its consequences in their own lives. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a whole and believe that young women would benefit from reading it.

Some good points, but the book is so long, a lot of it gets lost along the way. It would be good to read a condensed version of the book with the main points highlighted.
