I took this book on a sojourn, camping alone in the desert for two nights while trying to learn more about God in nature and solitude.
It was the right book to bring.

I am grateful for her shout-outs to Emerson, Poe, Whitman, and Wordsworth because she has convinced me to give Leaves of Grass another try... we'll see how that goes but at least she has helped me understand why it is the way it is.

A good book to read outside. Oliver shows us how to make meaningful connections with the natural world and shows its sweet and glorious side along with the heartless and the cruel. She is in love with the world around her and that's just my favorite thing: seeing the world with eyes delighted by wonder and not with my own tired, apathetic vision.
And on a technical level, the writing is just sublime.

I had already read some of the essays, and I wasn’t in the mood for the rest.

the first two sections were incredibly frustrating and made me want to abandon the book altogether. it was like a mismatch of musings, an unedited first draft. it really picks up in the third section but the essays are still somewhat hit or miss. as much i love mary oliver's poetry, i can't honestly say this collection lives up to her.
