'The September House' by Carissa Orlando is a thoughtful look at one woman holding her own in a haunted house.
After Margaret and her husband move into their dream house, they discover that it is haunted every September. The house becomes too much for Margaret's husband and he decides to leave. Margaret, on the other hand, learns how to deal with the house's eccentricities, like blood pouring down the walls and ghosts that bite when you get too close. But when Margaret's daughter Katherine discovers that her father has gone missing, she shows up at the house to search for him and discovers that her mother is not living a normal, happy life.
'The September House' is a fascinating story that delves into one woman learning how to live in a haunted house and what this says about her life. The house is very much a metaphor for her larger life situation but delving into that further would be a bit of a spoiler. I appreciate when an author uses a speculative element to discuss something nonspeculative and Orlando does that quite well in this novel. Margaret's situation and what she has been going through is slowly revealed throughout the book and there were a few points that could be considered twists as the story veered into unexpected territory. I really got on with the writing style and the humor of the book. The story veers from more satirical at the beginning to more straight horror toward the middle and end. If you are looking for a thought provoking book that delves into one woman's situation using a speculative element, then definitely check out 'The September House.'

This book might have taken a while to get in to, but my god once it did it took off!
There were certainly really dark elements wrapped up at the heart of this story, but it handled things in such a good, honest and raw way.
It’s a haunted house tale that is sure to stay with me for a long time, having planted its roots deep in my brain, as the house has with Margaret.
A trigger warning of child abuse, alcoholism, as well as domestic and emotional abuse is something that’s important to share, but, in my personal opinion (and personal experience with emotional abuse), it’s handled with the upmost care.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book, as I find that haunted house stories tend to be very hit or miss for me. However, this book ended up being a major hit for me, and was a scary haunted house book but also made me very emotional at the end.

I also really loved how this book tackled the themes of
cyclical and generational abuse, trauma, and mental illness
. On top of just being a really good supernatural story, I think it did a fantastic job metaphorically as well.

Major Spoilers:
About halfway through this book, I began to worry that it was going to be another “it was all in her head” cop out, and for a moment it really looked like it was going to be. So I was really thrilled that it ended up not doing that. I also think the author did a great job with imagery, and I think I’m going to be thinking about those scary little pointing children for awhile.
